GIS Education Center

image1 sf bay area usgs 536 300The GIS Education Center (GISEC) is a growing community of GIS students, interns, and practitioners who attend workshops together at computer labs located at a one of City College's convenient campuses. The Center offers short term workshops focused on issues of immediate use and concern, including economic development, healthy communities, and urban planning. Workshops use ESRI's industry standard ArcGIS 10 software, and as a student you will receive a 1-year license of this software, complete with advanced extensions including Network Analyst, Spatial Analyst, and 3D Analyst.

Our Workshops

image2 college classroom2 542 300Our workshops are designed to provide students with the fundamentals of GIS: what it is, how and in what industries it is most effectively used, and what tools are required for its application. Most of our workshops use the short-course format, allowing students to learn quickly while also providing time to practice and absorb the content. In addition, our instructors are professionals with expertise in GIS and are eager to share their GIS knowledge.

Why GIS?

GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems...in other words: Computers + Maps = GIS. Displaying information visually on a map allows analysts and decision-makers to better understand the parameters of the work and the impact of their decisions on the larger community. This is a vital skill for the 21st century, and GIS software proficiency and spatial literacy are highly desirable skills from the perspective of employers. In fact, US Department of Labor and the Career One-Stop consider geospatial technologies to be one of the most rapidly growing fields. Our workshops help you obtain the skills that make you more competitive.

What We Do

image4 b300 600
The GIS Education Center is staffed by instructors who work regularly with GIS in their chosen fields and are eager to share this knowledge. By partnering with our students, our primary mission is to grow the community of GIS practitioners and enable them to find employment and conduct research in a wide range of industries that have harnessed the analytical and graphical power of GIS technology.

We offer free lectures on topics within our field, such as data visualization or cartographic design. As a Center we engage with projects from an array of innovative and progressive Bay Area organizations.
