GIS Education Center workshops are designed to give students a structured approach while providing flexibility to explore specific topics in a short course format.
If you are new to GIS, seeking a career change, interested in augmenting current skills, or curious about GIS, we suggest you begin with the free two hour workshop, GIS in Action: Theory & Practice to gain an overview of the GIS concepts, field and industry.
Our most popular workshop, GIS Quick Start, is a five-week introductory workshop for working professionals and college students to begin their GIS skills training. This introductory workshop provides students with the software, instruction, and labs designed to explore the software and its basic capabilities. This workshop serves as the prereq to other workshops which require previous GIS skills or knowledge.
All of our workshops emphasize hands-on experience with the latest industry leading GIS software package, Esri's ArcGIS Desktop 10. Most of our workshops provide the software as well as additional material to support your training after the workshop is completed.
Workshop Series
Workshop Series
GISEC workshops are given either a "100" or "200" code to delineate the skill level required for a student to enroll.
| Series | Description | Workshop Examples |
| GIS-100's | Introductory workshops. Little or no previous GIS skills are required for a student to enroll. These workshops typically enroll students new to GIS or needing a refresher of the software. | • GIS in Action: Theory & Practice • GIS Data Mining • GIS for Economic Development • GIS Quick Start • Web GIS I |
| GIS-200's | Require 100 series workshop or previous GIS knowledge and skill. Students are expected to already posses fundamental knowledge of the software. | • GIS II - Vector & Raster Analysis • GIS Data Management & Visualization • GIS for Urban Planning & Healthy Neighborhoods • Spatial Regression Analysis • Web GIS II |
Worskhop Categories
Workshop Categories
GISEC workshops focus on either the tool itself or an application of GIS.
| Category | Description | Workshop Examples |
| Tools of GIS | Workshops in this category are heavily focused on using and understanding the software, interface, and tools to perform GIS tasks. | • GIS Quick Start • GIS II - Vector & Raster Analysis • GIS Data Management & Visualization • GIS Data Mining • Spatial Regression Analysis • Web GIS I |
| Applications of GIS | These workshops are designed to explore the application of GIS towards a specific topic. Students will engage in applying GIS as it pertains to planning & policy. | • GIS for Economic Development • GIS for Urban Planning & Healthy Neighborhoods |
Pathways
The pathways below are designed to guide students through our program and to gain the skill-sets they desire.» GIS Technician
| Description | Workshops | ||||||||||||||
| The selection of these four workshops will provide students with the skills necessary to manage a GIS project from start to finish, understand GIS file formats, perform GIS analysis, modeling, map compilation techniques, and dissemination of data via the web. This pathway can be completed in one semester and is offered every semester. This pathway covers many of the same the topics and applications covered in the entire GIS Certificate at CCSF. |

» GIS as a Toolset
| Description | Workshops | ||||||||
| Students interested in gaining the basic GIS skills should, at minimum, enroll in the GIS Quick Start and then assess further needs based on other workshops available.
Typically, our students will complete the GIS Quick Start and GIS II - Vector & Raster Analysis, then return in the following semesters to complete other workshops of interest. The GIS Quick Start can typically be accepted as an equivilant to many introductory GIS courses offered at other colleges or universities. However, students should inquire with their GIS instructor at the other institution. |
