Workshops PDF Print E-mail
 Fall 2008
 Spring 2009

The GIS Education Center offers a variety of workshops in geospatial technologies. Workshops have been organized into two tracts, based on what you need to learn and how you will apply the information. You are welcome to explore both areas and see what works best for your purposes.

The Basic/Nonprofit tract is developed for activists and researchers, people working in nonprofits, community based organizations, and the general public. This tract focuses on programs like Google Earth and Google Maps to help users disseminate their data.

The Professional/Technical tract is designed to deliver skills needed to acquire professional or technical positions in the geospatial industry. These workshops are for professionals wanting to upgrade their skills and those interested in expanding their knowledge about desktop GIS.

TM110 [Register Now!]

$110 or $100 with early registration

Information:

The powerful and affordable GIS software available today enables a cartographer to incorporate vast amounts of geospatial data for the production of detailed maps. These maps may serve a variety of purposes including the simple display of quantitative data, as tools for educational purposes and as a component of advocacy efforts. While GIS software makes the production of these maps a fairly simple task, the GIS practioner must balance the science of GIS with the artistry of information design.

Strategies for achieving this balance will be the focus of the course. Students will work with geospatial data using ArcGIS software in order to produce a set of maps that communicate information effectively. Case studies will also be presented in order to illustrate the concepts covered in class.

Information: Maps provide stories about change. Each one offers a unique glimpse into a fragment of our world, frozen at a particular point in time. One method of visualizing the change inherent in maps is to compare them to their modern counterparts. With today's wide availability of high-quality digital map data and easy-to-use Geographic Information System (GIS) software, old paper maps can be digitally scanned and aligned (georeferenced) with their exact locations on modern maps.

This hands-on, project-based class will introduce students to this exciting technique and demonstrate how new life can be breathed into old maps, allowing them to tell their old stories in a fresh and revealing way. Students are encouraged to bring their favorite maps to class. Each student will leave the class with a CD containing high-resolution digital images of their paper map and the results of their georeferencing project.
