Augmented Reality: Excursions into Digital Territories

This lecture will explore the roll of Augmented Reality, 3D models, and web services (mobile or desktop) which enable users to understand, analyze, and contribute to the development of our urban spaces. Presenters will discuss their current projects, the interdisciplinary roll of AR, and the road-map for this technology.

Gene Becker (@genebecker) is a leader in emerging technologies that blend the physical and digital worlds. As Layar's US-based AR Strategist, Gene is responsible for building the creative ecosystem for the Layar augmented reality platform, working with brands, creative agencies, developers and grassroots AR enthusiasts. Prior to joining Layar, Gene was a director at Hewlett-Packard, where he led advanced research and business development for web-based mobile and ubiquitous computing, co-founded a cloud services business, and led worldwide R&D for extreme gaming and mobility brand Voodoo PC. He is the founder of strategy consultancy Lightning Laboratories, a co-founder of the ARDevCamp unconference and organizer of the Ubiquitous Media Studio meetup. Gene studied engineering and computer science at MIT and Stanford, and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Sha Hwang
Developer Programs Engineer, Movity/Trulia educated as an architect

Sha Hwang studied and worked in architecture at IwamotoScott and MESH Architectures before diving headfirst into data visualization at Stamen Design. At Stamen Sha worked on projects for clients like CNN, MTV, Adobe, and Flickr. Last year, Sha cofounded a startup called Movity focused on visualization and cities. Movity was recently acquired by the real estate company Trulia to bring their work to a national audience. Sha is endlessly fascinated by maps, data, design, and cities.

Mike Reilly
PI, Bay Area Metropolitan Government

Michael Reilly is a Principal Researcher in the Bay Area Metropolitan Government, a private-sector consultant, and a university researcher and lecturer. His work centers on the interaction between cities and the natural environment through applications of integrated urban-transport modeling, city and regional planning, and spatial analysis. His academic training was at UC Berkeley, Columbia University, and Stanford University.
