GeoData@UC Berkeley (http://gis.lib.berkeley.edu) is a geoportal where users from around the world can search for geospatial data and scanned maps in the UC Berkeley Earth Sciences and Mpa Library collection using a web browser. The geoportal allows users to search spatially as well as a full text metadata search. All the data viewable in the geoportal can be downloaded and used in desktop GIS software and Google Earth.

Often GIS analysts who work with vector data, particularly demographic vector data, are interested in the proportion of a variable within a defined distance of a particular feature or set of features. An example of this may be the number of households within ½ mile of a park using census tracts. Depending on the data scale, performing such analyses may not be as simple as a spatial join, in which case a proportional split model can be used to correctly account for dissimilar polygon shapes and overlap.

The UC Berkeley Earth Sciences & Map Library collection consists of more than 140,000 print volumes, including at over 60,000 books, dissertations, and reports. The collection covers all areas of the earth sciences including geology, geophysics, seismology, atmospheric science, and oceanography. The library also actively collects in physical geography and purchases selected titles in human geography.

Evaluating the neighborhood’s housing units based on the impact by intensity of several crime types and their locations in relation with schools’ service areas. GIS software and its ability to present a final conclusion based on several overlapping analysis results in a particular area makes it suitable for projects that require different data impacts and their relation with one another visually showed on one united map.
Analysis of Walk Distance for Elementary School Students

The West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) serves approximately 30,830 students, who attend 38 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 6 comprehensive high schools, and 10 alternative schools. WCCUSD uses GIS to determine how far elementary students have to walk to their schools. Walk distances are computed annually to see patterns of residency and when attendance boundaries change due to school closures.
